Whale watching from Perth: Hillarys or Fremantle?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Perth whale trips follow migrating wildlife, not a fixed timetable. Humpbacks are commonly targeted during the southern migration, but exact dates shift and operators can shorten seasons. Check the current departure calendar and cancellation policy before planning a day around one sailing.
Hillarys versus Fremantle
Fremantle is the simpler choice if you are staying near the rail line or combining the cruise with the port city. The two-hour humpback-watching cruise is the stronger fit for that plan. Hillarys works well from northern suburbs and has its own two-hour option, but reaching the harbour can require more road travel from central Perth.
Neither port makes the ocean calm. Wind and swell matter more than the postcode, and wildlife cannot be scheduled. Read what the operator offers if no whale is seen; terms differ. If seasickness is a concern, ask a pharmacist or doctor before travel rather than relying on internet remedies, and choose a morning with the forecast you can tolerate. The honest choice is the port that reduces your land journey and leaves enough flexibility for weather changes.
