Dolphins and sea lions: Mandurah, Rockingham or Penguin Island?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 3 min read
Mandurah, Rockingham and Penguin Island are often grouped into one wildlife day, but they answer different questions. Mandurah is the straightforward choice for a scenic dolphin cruise. Rockingham is the base for active trips in Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Penguin Island is a protected day-visit site, not a zoo where a penguin appearance can be scheduled.
Choose the experience, not the animal list
A Mandurah cruise suits travellers who prefer a boat, sheltered waterways and minimal physical effort. Dolphins remain wild, so read the operator’s no-sighting terms rather than treating a photograph as a promise.
The Rockingham sea-kayak trip to Seal and Penguin Islands is a six-hour day with Perth transport, tandem kayaks, picnic lunch and snorkelling equipment listed as included. Choose it for paddling and the marine landscape. Sea lions, dolphins, penguins and birds live in the area, but that list is habitat, not a guaranteed roll call.
Penguin Island needs a current check
The island normally closes from June into October to reduce disturbance during the penguin breeding period. It can also close because of hazardous crossings or forecast extreme heat. Check official park alerts immediately before travel. Do not walk across the sandbar: currents and water depth change quickly, and the park authority explicitly recommends the ferry.
Independent visitors should bring food because the island has no food outlet and take their rubbish back. Keep to paths, boardwalks and sandy beaches, and never feed wildlife. If your priority is relaxed dolphin watching, choose Mandurah. If you want an active full day from Perth, choose the Rockingham kayak trip. Choose Penguin Island independently only after confirming that it is open and accepting that wild little penguins may remain unseen.
